Author: Sylvain Runberg, Eduardo Ocaña (Illustrator)

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13579360-darwin-s-diaries-vol-1?ac=1&from_search=true

Genre: comic, mystery, history, thriller

Synopsis:

This follows Charles Darwin on a special mission for the Prime Minister in York. Where there has been terrible attacks on workers building the railway. However, will Charles find the beast who did it or will it be even more of a mystery?
Artwork:

The artwork was so beautiful in this comic. Especially when there was landscapes on a page, it looks like a magical painting. The use of a dark tone was perfect for representing the Victorian Era and created a thrilling element of the story. The palette of colours are beautiful warm colours which always draws me more into a story. I loved that the beast was not shown till the end and it was a shadow of your imagination.

Dialogue:

I really liked that the dialogue was dramatic in the attacking scenes because it brought the suspense to life. I loved the dialogue between Darwin and Suzanne it was two intellectuals who didn’t fit in that society and created great comedy through their interactions. The conversations throughout the comic were snappy and quick which kept a thriller like pace.

Characters:

Darwin was a complicated character with a real dark side suffering for his intellect which gave him a lot of intrigue. Suzanne was independent and modern woman not afraid to say what she thinks which I loved. Captain Sanders just made me laugh so funny with his moustache and a cocky look to him and his dialogue. Mr Hudson what a know it all asshole I really didn’t like him. Sort of a representation of a typical man in 1800’s.

Plot:

A great start to the main story, it was thrilling and very intriguing. The mystery was done so it drip fed you into it which meant you never got bored. The build up to the ending was a little fast for me as I would have liked more of a battle of the beasts and soldiers. Overall, it was mysterious and gripping throughout and beyond.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this comic because it was a historical thrill ride with a mysterious beast, what is not to like. The only thing I was a bit disappointed in was that I wanted more content in the comic as I felt it was a bit too short. However, I loved it and can’t wait to read more. This is a comic for anyone who enjoys a historical mystery or mystical beasts.
