Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal

This is about a boy’s relationship with his grandfather and a magical world filled with peculiar happenings. But will Jacob understand the world he has been thrown into or will his world turn into a whirl pool of chaos?

Style of Writing:

I enjoyed his style but I found it quite dense at the beginning which made it hard to get into. I really liked that it was in first person because you felt more connected to Jacob which was important as so much of the book is centred on how he deals with every situation. I liked that the photos broke up the chapters as you got more of a clear picture into the world.

The theme of family was explored in a fantastic way from death to relationships to who you call family with a great insight into it. The theme of youth throughout the book shows the strength of youth and their sheer imagination and wonder which you see throughout the book. The theme of time I loved because it was used in such a magical way as protection which made the world so detached from the outside world which was why it was such an intriguing world.

Jacob was an interesting character as he development throughout the book. I have to say he did annoy me throughout because of his lack of confidence. Emma I really liked her because she is very curious and wide-eyed. Plus she was a contrast to Jacob being curious about her world when she is so curious about the real world. Peregrine I really liked her character she was so interesting especially her background. I would have liked more from her but I am expecting more in book two. I really didn’t like Franklin I found him dismissive and not at all understanding.

I found the plot quite slow to begin with which is one of reasons it took me a while to get into. By the time we met the children I was hooked. It became so much more thrilling and exciting. The past and present element worked really well to understand Jacob’s connection to the real and peculiar world but it also gave the book a grounding. I loved the ending it was suspenseful and gripping especially the battle with the hollowgast.

My Thoughts:

I know it sounds like I didn’t this book but I just found it hard to get into at first. By the end of the book I was hooked I loved Miss Peregrine and all the children they were so magical and interesting. I can’t wait to see where the next adventure will take me?
