Synopsis:
This story of two teenagers who both have cystic fibrosis. They both meet at the hospital as they are doing their treatment. They are two polar opposites, Stella is strict with her regime while Will has a serious type of cystic fibrosis and can’t see any hope in his life. Will their friendship help their treatments or will their friendship turn into something more?
My Thoughts:
This book emotionally wrecks you completely you just can’t believe that they can’t be together because they have this disease and have to be six feet apart at all times. You want love to concur all so they can fall madly in love and enjoy life to the full. Granted love is never easy but these two people really have it rough which you so wish they didn’t. I loved that you get both perspectives of how their love for each other grows plus it makes you root for their love so much more. They are very different in their voices and their views on life which worked well as a contrast to see how this disease can take you on a different path in the way you view your life. I think I liked Will’s perspective more than Stella’s as I am just not that much of a peppy person I am more of a deep thinker I think.
The relationships outside of the hospital played a big part in the development how they both saw their situations which was lovely to see that they never lost that connection to their family as well at least in Stella’s case. Will’s situation with his mum is such a complex look at how relationships can just completely go into the abyss of not really talking just seeing what is in front of you. This has turned into a deep review. It is not all about serious relationship issues with parents and not allowed to touch because of their disease.
It also has some moments of real hope and friendship which are beautiful to read and makes you very warm and fuzzy inside. Like the moments on the roof which you can see the start of something that makes you go yes please hang out I want to see where this goes. Their dates are literally adorable with them sneaky out to see each other in the middle of the night. The swimming pool date was such a incredible look at the way we look at beauty and our bodies. By the end your just in tears because you know they are just so perfect together.
This book takes you on an emotional roller-coaster that you love and hate at the same time because you have this feeling at the back of your mind that the ending might not be what you want it to be which at that point you just wish life was less cruel, but is that thought right you’ll have to read it to find out. I loved Poe as a character so kind and such a real character that could see that life is never going to be easy but you just have to make the most of it and that is what Poe reminds me to do. This book gave me hope in love and in life when I read it because the characters feel realistic and the journey you go on with them is just heartbreaking and incredible at the same time. I think anyone who loves a beautiful love story or an emotional wrecking will really enjoy this beautiful journey. This is one of my favourite contemporary books and there is a beautiful film to go along side it. I hope this book gives you hope like it did me.
