This follows a young girl, Nancy who went to the underworld and became the princess of death but her parents say she dreamed it all up. So they send her to Miss West’s school for challenging children. Little do the parents know what really goes on in that school and whether those children can find their doorway again to their world?

My Pitch To You:

I adored this book it was absolutely insane and magical at the same time and it captured my heart completely that I just can’t wait to read the next in the series. Also it is something I have never seen done before something that is totally original and fascinating. The idea is that all the students and Miss West have been through a door whether it is a light or a dark door is the question and then there are different subsections I haven’t got my head around all of it but from what I understand they sound like the most fascinating places on the planet. I hope she does a history of this Doorway world one day I would love to read it.

Nancy is the main character but you never feel like she is dominating the book which is good because of the way the magic system is set up you wouldn’t want to only hear about her experience even though her experience is interesting. Sumi I love her, she is one my favourite characters she has this bubbliness like me that I just love in people especially when they get so passionate. I really liked Kade as well, he is that solitary soulful type that has something up his sleeve but also a good friend which is nice to have in a very whirlwind book. Miss West is a great headmistress because she is someone who has been through what the kids she is teaching have been through so she has this mothering quality to her that I love. She also reminds me a bit of Professor McGonagle in that strict but kind way.

The plot of this book is complex and very fast paced I reread a few chapters in this book because so much happens that at the end of a chapter I knew I’d missed something important but it never felt annoying to reread because it flowed beautifully. The book is very thrilling in the second half which kept me on the edge of my seat with the mystery part which tied perfectly to the worlds and the effects they were having on the students. The ending is open which I liked because I know there is more to come and this is a world I never want to stop exploring. Seanen has this way of drawing you in and surprising at every turn which makes me want to binge the rest of the series.

Overall, this is a really fantastic start to a series that I know I will love forever as Seanen has created such interesting characters that make you want to open a doorway to see which type of doorway you would get. I love the length of the book usually with this short length I would say I wanted more but after reading it I was absolutely content. This is perfect for those who love insanely magical adventures that will make you go what just happened? She looks at some hard subjects that happen to kids in their lives but manages to explain it so you understand a lot of that situation. It is just an incredible book that I wish I had as a teenager.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
