Season 1

Episode 1

So another Dickens adaptation. Are you surprised? I’m not which is sad. However, this one seems to be surprisingly good with an amazing cast. If you don’t know the story of Mr Scrooge. He is a grumpy awful man that has lost his business partner recently. So his business partner decides to haunt him and fulfill his mission to get Mr Scrooge to heaven.

I like Guy Pearce he plays a very solemn Scrooge that has a rich backstory that may be explored more later on. The setting is glum with a glint of hope which I think is nice because I think that’s something some adaptations miss. It is a very light start to the story in terms of how much plot is in there. I’m interested to see where it goes next.

Episode 2

Well this took a very dark realistic turn. This episode follows the past of Scrooge’s life all the ghosts that reveal all the bad things he has done. Plus a trip to his childhood.

It’s a harsh episode to watch as it is filled with a lot of painful memories. It is a great episode in terms of delving into the character and why he is the way he is. This episode leaves no detail of what it was like in those times unturned which is the way Dickens wanted people to see that time for what it actually was like for people.

Episode 3

What an ending they truly pulled out all the stops for this series even though the publicity wasn’t the greatest. It was a great ending to the series but it left it open ended which I am curious about. So the ghosts are arriving and they have a lot to say or do they?

This was such a powerful episode to do with not just love and caring for others it brought up the idea of forgiveness. I think Guy Pearce and Mrs Cratchit; Vinette Robinson did an amazing job with such powerful performances that you were on the edge of your seat for most of this episode. The pacing was just right even though I was worried at first as to how they would fit all the ghosts in one episode. Overall, it is a fascinating adaptation and one in my mind represents truly what Dickens wanted to say. Definitely watch it if you love Dickens or period dramas.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

As always keep geeking!
